Fees and Billing Practices
- We always discuss our fees at the beginning in an open and honest manner.
- We are happy to charge a fair, fixed fee where the scope of the work can be agreed upon between us.
- If we cannot determine a fixed fee, we will give you a fee range e.g. between $x and $y – and we will stick to that range.
- If the matter takes an unexpected turn, we will discuss this with you and fix a new fee by agreement if needed.
- We always provide a written costs agreement.
- We NEVER send you a bill you do not expect. If we said it will be $x, then that is what it will be.
- We provide a number of payment options such as cash, cheque, credit card, direct credit, internet banking, Pay Pal or payment by instalments if appropriate.
- We will consider “no-win, no-fee” arrangements where appropriate and where the law allows it.
Costs and Efficiency
- Our first interview is always free. We do not charge you for the privilege of getting to know you!
- We do what we know and we do it well. This allows us to be more efficient.
- We use modern technology such as document automation, email, scanning and software. This makes us more efficient and makes our service faster.
- We do not rely on paper. As far as our internal processes go, we are paper-free. This reduces our stationery cost, reduces our storage and archival costs and reduces the floor space our offices occupy. Our overheads are lower so our costs can be lower.
- We do not rely on time billing so we have no incentive to drag a matter out. We want to achieve a solution for you at the lowest possible cost in the least amount of time.
- We are efficient but we do not compete on price and we do not aim to be the lowest cost provider.
- Our goal is to provide you with value for which you are happy to pay a fair price.
Communication
- First and foremost we are here to listen so that we can understand your concerns.
- We can come to you. We like to visit your business or your work site so that we can know you and your industry better.
- We give you advice in plain English. We draft our legal documents in plain English.
Honesty and Integrity
- Our main source of work is referrals and word of mouth.
- Have you ever made a mistake? While we have extensive systems and processes in place to avoid mistakes, and while we take great care in what we do – if we do make a mistake we will take responsibility for it, own up to it, explain the error and rectify it.
- We maintain your confidentiality and avoid any conflicts of interest.
Quality Advice
- We are not afraid to say that we are first and foremost “black letter lawyers”. We provide quality advice about the law. We do not pretend to be business advisors, “know-it-alls”, financial planners, psychologists, mortgage brokers, real estate agents or web consultants!
